Cancer patients expect surgery for more than five months

Large overloads on the health care system are recorded in hospitals in Thessaloniki, and the waiting time for an operation by cancer patients, in one of them, is enormous. For six months, those who do not have coronavirus are waiting for medical intervention or passing a diagnostic test.

This was announced by the radiologist, curator of the A ‘department of the ΓΝΘ “Παπαγεωργίου” hospital, Christos Papastergiu, who emphasized: “The situation for cancer patients is tragic – their operation is postponed for at least five months! There are hundreds of thousands of patients across the country whose operations or diagnostic tests canceled or postponed. “

The radiological medicine specialist adds: “The unenviable fate has befallen cancer patients, who in the past waited only a few weeks for surgery, and now wait five and six months, while the private sector does not deal with these cases. There is also a huge queue for diagnostic examinations. As a result, timely diagnosis of serious diseases, such as, for example, cancer, is delayed, and this is unacceptable! “

Here we should note that cancer patients go to hospitals in Thessaloniki almost every day to find out when they will have a life-saving operation. However, doctors cannot give an exact date …

According to Mr. Papastergiu, the number of patients with covid in hospitals could reach 550 (on average, 355 patients were hospitalized in the last seven days). However, the situation is now slightly better than in the previous two weeks.
