Mitsotakis-Putin Meeting: “Opportunities for Improving Greco-Russian Relations”

The closed meeting of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis with Vladimir Putin continues at the summer residence of the Russian President in Sochi.

During a reception with Vladimir Putin, Mr. Mitsotakis stressed that “Greek-Russian relations can improve in the economic, bilateral trade and tourism sectors.”

The prime minister described the 2021 year of Greek-Russian history as a trigger for closer cooperation at all levels, sending a signal that the Greek economy is growing at a very fast pace as the pandemic comes to an end as – he noted.

Mr. Mitsotakis did not fail to mention, as he described it, Russia’s role in regional events as a permanent member of the Security Council to emphasize that they will have the opportunity to exchange views on regional security issues.

He did not forget to praise Russia’s contribution to achieving the goals of the Greek Revolution of 1821 to mark the completion of the 200th anniversary of its beginning, while he said he was delighted to visit Sochi, which, as he put it, is home to many Greeks of Russian descent.

In fact, the prime minister reminded Putin that he first visited Sochi 30 years ago when he accompanied his late father and then Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis.

The Russian President, for his part, emphasized the special ties and relations between the two countries, noting that the year of Russian-Greek history coincided with the 200th anniversary of the start of the Greek revolution, during which, according to him, Russia contributed to the fulfillment of the aspirations of the Greek people.

Putin expressed satisfaction with the pace of growth in bilateral trade and economic relations, stressing that trade has increased significantly this year, reaching pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

In conclusion, he stressed that the discussion between the leaders of the two countries will touch upon a wider range of issues.

Following the tête-à-tête meeting and the ensuing working lunch, the two leaders will give a press conference.
