One in ten passengers on two planes who arrived at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport from South Africa on Friday tested positive for the coronavirus.
A total of 624 people arrived. All of them were tested for the presence of COVID-19. Checks continued on Saturday. Some passengers, presumably, found a new strain of omicron, writes Reuters. According to the order of the authorities, “people with a positive test result will be placed in isolation at a hotel in Schiphol or near it.” Health officials say:
“We are studying positive tests as soon as possible to determine if this is a dangerous new strain, now called Omicron.”
Earlier in the Netherlands, a lockdown was introduced. Acting Prime Minister Mark Rutte notes that the pressure on the health care system is again “extremely high” due to the increase in the number of cases. On December 3, a government meeting will be held, at which a decision will be made whether to extend it.
