Patras: € 100,000 to replace trash cans destroyed by fire

Over the past four years, replacing dozens of green and blue waste bins destroyed by fire has cost the municipality of Patras more than € 100,000.

According to the municipality, the main cause of the fire is the release of coal and ash from fireplaces, wood-burning stoves, grills, etc. into street waste bins.

This is due to the fact that the discarded products of the functioning of the stoves in most cases hide the centers (sparks), which cause the ignition of the combustible materials contained in the garbage cans.

In fact, according to the municipality, from the beginning of 2021 to the present day, the magnitude of the “disaster” has increased compared to the corresponding period last year. In 2021, a total of 168 trash cans, 99 green and 69 blue, were destroyed and replaced.

The municipality asks citizens not to throw hazardous materials into waste containers, since the destruction of equipment and its replacement with new ones burden the budget of both the municipality itself and the “pockets” of citizens.
