A 54-year-old woman was found stabbed to death in a family apartment in the suburb of Egaleo, in western Athens. The woman was stabbed several times in the neck, chest and abdomen and was lying in a pool of blood when the police arrived, summoned by alarmed neighbors.
The main suspect in the murder is the 20-year-old son, the second youngest of five children.
Neighbors said that they saw him running out of the apartment through the window, when the other son, the youngest, who had witnessed the murder, started screaming for help. The youngest child with mobility problems appears to have witnessed the murder.
The family lived on disability benefits and was economically supported by their eldest son, 25 years old. My father died a few years ago in an accident at work.
Neighbors told the media and police that the family was in dire economic straits and that quarrels between the victim and their youngest son were common.
The murder suspect was once removed from his home by social services and spent some time in a social welfare facility. He was still on the run early Wednesday night.
A preliminary autopsy confirmed death from stab wounds.
