Fires crippled government credibility: gap between ND and SYRIZA narrowed

The New Democracy Party has lost ground. This was revealed by a public opinion poll that took place after the large-scale fires. Although, according to a GPO poll conducted by the newspaper TA NEA, the Mitsotakis government retains a significant double-digit advantage over the opposition party SYRIZA.

The numerous questions and criticism that arose during the extinguishing of fires obviously “touched” the state, since “cracks” appear for the first time in the dynamics of positions held, which reach 2%. At the same time, the official opposition and other parties do not demonstrate advantages, but, on the contrary, remain unchanged in percentage terms.

According to the poll, in terms of intent to vote, the ruling party dropped 2 points: New Democracy has 34.5% versus SYRIZA’s 24.4%, and the difference between the two parties is 10.1 percentage points. In the June related poll, the two parties accounted for 36.5% and 24.1%, respectively.

At the same time, Movement for Change (Κίνημα Αλλαγής) is showing a decline, gaining 6.4% compared to 6.7% in June. It is followed by the Communist Party KKE with 6%, Ελληνική Λύση with 4.1% and ΜέΡΑ25 with 3%.

Fires and politics

According to the survey, 76.5% of participants believe that the state machinery could control firefighting more effectively, while the Prime Minister, who accounts for 58.2%, is also responsible for coordinating work in this regard. An unsatisfactory assessment of the authorities’ performance also seems to trigger some “political events”, as a total of 49.4% (and probably yes) urge the Prime Minister to immediately start a government reshuffle, compared with 35.9% who do not foresee any changes in the composition of the government. At the same time, the responsibility lies with the competent ministers and officials: 54.7% ask for the removal of Mr. Chrysochoidis, 42.8% of Mr. Hardalias and 48.9% of the fire chief. The announced measures to provide assistance to victims of the fire are considered satisfactory by 59.4% of the respondents. The most encouraging element of the survey for the government is the fact that the criticism of SYRIZA and KINAL on the issue of fires has not received widespread acceptance from citizens who were skeptical about it.

Pandemic fatigue
According to the survey, citizens are showing obvious fatigue from the pandemic: 54.9% negatively assess the management of the situation during the period in which we are, and 91.4% believe that an increase in the number of cases is expected in the fall.

Leaders in politics

The most popular political leader is Kyriakos Mitsotakis with 49.8% of the vote, compared with 31.6% for Alexis Tsipras.

This is followed by: from 27.8% Dimitris Kutsumbas; with 25.7% Fofi Gennimata, with 16.1% Janis Varoufakis and 11.8% with Kyriakos Velopoulos.
