An earthquake struck Paleochora (Chania)

Tremors with a force of 3.7 on the Richter scale were recorded by seismographs of the Geodynamic Institute in Chania.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 points on the Richter scale shook Crete a month ago, July 24. The epicenter of the earthquake was 11 km southeast of Ano Acharnes and 21 km southeast of Heraklion. Residents of Crete are worried about the daily tremors in the Heraklion prefecture, recorded since the beginning of June. Gerasimos Papadopoulos, research president of the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, expressed his point of view on this issue on Radio Crete.

The expert noted that scientists monitoring the phenomenon cannot say for sure about the emergence of a new fault. According to Papadopoulos, this is probably a small and unmapped rift that moves from south to north. Scientists agree that there will be no earthquakes exceeding 4.5 on the Richter scale. But again, said Mr Papadopoulos, we cannot answer yes or no to that. And this statement was confirmed by an earthquake measuring 4.9 points.

The focal depth was 43 km. The epicenter of the earthquake was located 48 kilometers west of Paleochora, a town 77 kilometers south of the city of Chania. We remind you that earthquake data coming from the Geodynamic Institute of Athens or the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Institute are recorded using an automated computer system, without the participation of a seismologist, and are constantly updated.
