Evia: breaking news after a nightmare night

Merciless fire continues to capture new territories in Evia. At the moment, the flames have surrounded Vasiliki and threaten several more villages. More than 2000 inhabitants of the island were evacuated by ferry.

According to APE-MPE, the village of Ellinika is currently in flames. There, firefighters and residents who remained after the evacuation are desperately fighting with him. In Vasilik, fire penetrated the city, fire engines were unable to stop the flames approaching the city.

The fire front has exceeded 6 km and reaches the Galatsona-Geraki-Gouves line, burning numerous pines on its way from the village of Agdines on this site and approaching the village of Gouves. Meanwhile, in Agdin another fire threatens the first houses.

From the Vota area, the flame spreads to the north, passing the Monokarja. With the help of earthmoving equipment, the firefighters are trying to stop him in the area located to the north of the village of the stream in order to prevent him from reaching Avgaria. Early in the morning, another fire front appeared, moving from the village of Milia. In the area of the village, two fronts converge and approach the village.

Initially, in the southern part of the island, winds drove the fire out to sea. But from about 3:00 the course of the fire changed, and he headed towards Kalivia and Trupi. The solid pine forest poses a huge threat. As I said this morning Governor Fanis Spanos, “If the fire passes through Kandili, the fight will stop.”

A little over an hour ago, the alarm sounded for the village of Daphnus. However, there is still hope that the approaching fire will be able to localize. Locals note that “the good news is that the winds are not strong and they are not currently pushing fire southward in the compact, pine-covered area.”

There are electricity problems on the island, hampering communications. From the first minutes of dawn, air means began to extinguish the fire.
