Many countries celebrate “Cat Day” today. On the initiative of the International Animal Welfare Foundation, International Cat Day is celebrated on August 8.
It was first recognized in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), one of the world’s largest animal welfare organizations located outside of Canada.
The forest cat (Felis silvestris) is considered the ancestor of the domestic cat. Man tamed this animal more than 10 thousand years ago. International feline breeding organizations recognize a huge number of standardized breeds. As of 2019, TICA is talking about 71, CFA is about 44, and FIFe is about 43.
In some countries, National Cat Days are celebrated on other dates. For example, in Russia – on March 1, in Italy on November 17, in the United States on October 29, and in Japan – on February 22.
International Cat Day aims to raise public awareness of cats, learn about how to keep and protect them. Many countries also celebrate National Cat Days to raise awareness of cat adoption.
In 2020, responsibility for International Cat Day shifted from IFAW to International Cat Care, a British non-profit organization founded in 1958 by cat lovers working to spread awareness of the health and well-being of cats.
The organization’s leadership states: “The goal is to empower and inspire people to understand the individual needs and perspectives of cats, and to act for the well-being of each cat. We do this by creating and sharing knowledge, ideas, skills and best practices so that people can have confidence in their ability to help cats and fight ignorance and delusion. ”

The Ecology Global Network estimates that there are about 600 million cats on the planet. This number includes pets, strays and cats living in various shelters. On the other hand, there are about 100 million feral cats.
