According to the latest forecasts from the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, high temperatures in Greece will continue over the weekend. Peak will occur on Monday 2 August when temperatures will exceed 45˚C locally.

The question arises: why does this hot heatwave last so long and is accompanied by such high temperatures?

“The answer lies in 10 kilometers above the earth’s surface and in the movement of the stream. A stream is a strong air current at an altitude of about 10 km from the earth’s surface, moving from west to east. It is located in areas where there is a strong temperature difference between two gas masses, and the movement of the flow determines the creation and movement of barometric systems.

In recent days, the prevailing air flow has shifted further south than its average climatic position in the Western Europe region, which has led to the development of a high pressure zone over our region and a gradual increase in temperature. This weather pattern is expected to continue at least until the start of the new week, with hot weather culminating on Monday when the high pressure field over the southern Balkans and our country is expected to intensify further, leading to higher temperatures.

At the same time, this atmospheric circulation in the coming days will contribute to the transfer of hot air masses to the alpine region, where it will be rainy with a lot of precipitation, which could lead to a recurrence of flooding in northern Italy, Switzerland and Austria.

Rainy weather and cooler temperatures during the season are expected in the rest of central and northern Europe north of the south stream, while no precipitation is expected in southeastern Europe south of the stream.

As for the weather on Friday 30.07 in our country, according to the forecast of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, the maximum temperatures in many areas will exceed 40 degrees. The absolute maximum will reach: 42-44 ° C on the mainland, 41 ° C in the Ionian Sea, 41-42 ° C in the East Aegean Sea. Temperatures in the Cyclades and North Crete will remain slightly lower due to the prevalence of northerly winds with an intensity of 4-6 on the Beaufort scale.

The weather is clear and very hot throughout the country. In the afternoon, slight clouds will appear in eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

Winds will blow with a force of 3 to 5 points, mainly from the north, in the southeast of the Aegean Sea up to 6 on the Beaufort scale. Temperatures will remain very high throughout the country (heat wave), and their maximum values ​​will be reached:

in Central Greece and Thessaly up to 42–44 ° С; in central Macedonia from 41 ° C to 43 ° C; in the rest of the mainland, on the Ionian Islands, the islands of the eastern Aegean Sea, southern Crete and the Dodecanese up to 40-41 ° C.

At the same time, the temperature will remain high at night, with minimum values ​​above 26-27 ° C.

The weather is clear and very hot throughout the country. In the afternoon, local clouds will appear in eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Winds will blow from the north, in the Ionian Islands and on the mainland from 2 to 4, in the Aegean from 3 to 5 and in some places up to 6 on the Beaufort scale.

Temperatures will remain very high throughout the country, with maximum values ​​on the mainland reaching 40-43 ° C and in some places 44 ° C, while on the island and in coastal areas it will be 2-3 degrees lower. At the same time, the minimum temperatures will be especially high, above 27-28 ° C, which increases the feeling of discomfort.

Monday 02/08

The weather is clear and very hot throughout the country. In the afternoon, several local cloud massifs are formed in the mountainous part. Winds will blow in the west and north-west from 3 to 4, in the east, north-north-west up to 5 and in the Aegean Sea in places up to 6 on the Beaufort scale.

Temperatures will remain very high throughout the country and even rise slightly, mainly on the mainland, and in some places in Thessaly will exceed 44 ° C.

Tuesday 03/08

The weather is clear and very hot throughout the country. Winds will blow from the north-north-west with a force of 3 to 5, and in some places in the sea 6 points on the Beaufort scale. Temperatures will remain very high throughout the country and will rise slightly, mainly in the east.

Wednesday 04/08

In general, the weather is clear and very hot. In the afternoon, several temporary clouds form in the central and northern mountains. Winds will blow from north to west from 3 to 4 and from east 4-6 on the Beaufort scale.

Air temperatures across the country will remain very high.
