Coronavirus: pregnant women at risk

The risk of contracting coronavirus in pregnant women is three times higher, Russian scientists warn.

The researchers named the category of citizens three times more likely to be infected with coronavirus – these are expectant mothers awaiting the birth of a baby, TASS reports. Scientists from the Chita State Medical Academy and Kemerovo State Medical University provide irrefutable data. Natalya Artymuk, chief freelance specialist of the Ministry of Health of Russia on obstetrics and gynecology of the Siberian Federal District, reports specific figures:

in 2020, the incidence in Siberia and the Far East averaged 1960 cases per 100 thousand people, and 5933 out of 100 thousand pregnant women were infected; 80% of expectant mothers have suffered a mild or asymptomatic coronavirus; 3.5% of women in childbirth, against 2.2% in general, were in intensive care; 505 cases per 100 thousand people, or 0.14%, were fatal.

Despite the fact that pregnant women were more often admitted to intensive care than other categories of patients, they required mechanical ventilation much less frequently. But there is no need to talk about the normal course of pregnancy here – in patients, the likelihood of premature birth increased by an average of 3 times, caesarean section – by 1.5 times.

Natalia Artymuk reminds that the only way to avoid such negative consequences is vaccination. The expert claims that for Sputnik V, for example, waiting for the birth of a baby is not a contraindication for vaccination. However, there are also special recommendations.

Earlier, RAS Corresponding Member Alexander Gorelov, Deputy Director for Research at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, said that the correct vaccination of pregnant women against coronavirus can be carried out only in the 3rd trimester. The vaccination can be done after all organs and systems of the child are laid.
