Haitian president assassinated, first lady injured

Death found 53-year-old Haitian President Jovenel Moise in his own house, where unknown persons entered.

Claude Joseph, the country’s prime minister, reported, quoted by the AP:

“A group of unidentified individuals, some of whom spoke Spanish, attacked the president’s private residence and fatally wounded him.”

The prime minister said in his address to the nation that he “condemns this inhuman and barbaric act.” He called for calm and assured that the security situation in the country was under control. He also said that the first lady was wounded by unknown assailants.

Haitian President Jovenel Moise was 53 years old. He has been in his post since 2017. He won back in 2015, but the election results were canceled due to allegations of fraud. Moiz won a second victory in 2016, becoming the head of state a year later.

The motives of the criminals, as well as their identities, have not yet been established. The prime minister said some of them spoke Spanish.
