Moderna changed its name

The American coronavirus vaccine manufacturer Moderna has renamed its drug, according to the European Medicines Agency EMA.

Previously, the manufacturer and its vaccine had the same name, now the drug will be called Spikevax. The company does not disclose the reasons for such a step, but it has the right to take it.

This May, on World Vaccine Congress, this drug was recognized as the best among the others on the shortlist – AstraZeneca, Sputnik V, Pfizer / BioNtech, Bharat Biotech, Medicago, Janssen, Novavax and Zoetis (the latter is for our smaller brothers). The Moderna vaccine was added to the WHO list of recommended for emergency use at the end of April, and in March its safety was confirmed by the EMA. In April, experts from the World Health Organization recommended the use of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine for patients aged 18+. It is the fifth COVID-19 vaccine to receive emergency approval from the organization.

Previously, the World Health Organization approved 4 vaccines: two from AstraZeneca, as well as from Pfizer and Janssen. At the same time, in the United States, the use of Moderna was allowed on December 16, a few days later in the European Union. Japan, Great Britain, South Korea, Canada, Israel, Switzerland and other countries have entered into contracts with the manufacturing company for the supply of vaccines. However, it was reported that pharmaceutical company Moderna (USA) will ship fewer doses than planned in the second quarter to the UK and Canada.
