Fire in the resort Nea Makri

Greek authorities ordered the evacuation of residents on the outskirts of the coastal resort town of Nea Makri near Athens late Monday evening. After a large forest fire broke out in the area.

At least two houses and several cars were burned, but no residents or firefighters were injured.

The fire started in two separate areas in the forest near the monastery of St. Ephraim on Monday evening, shortly before 22:30.

The fire department said more than 110 firefighters fought overnight to contain the fire with fire trucks and volunteers, while all units in the Greater Athens area were on alert. Since the fire broke out after dark, the planes were unable to provide assistance in extinguishing.

The deputy governor of the metropolitan area, Vasilis Kokkalis, told state-run ERT on Tuesday morning that two houses were completely burned down and three more were damaged.

The cause of the fire is not yet known *.

The fire was brought under control after dawn, when 3 firefighting aircraft joined in to extinguish it. Ground forces put out small fires in the area.

Much of central and southern Greece was hit in August by wildfires that devastated forests and destroyed hundreds of homes on the island of Evia and the northern outskirts of Athens. The fires followed the hottest days in the country in decades.

In the summer of 2018, a rapidly spreading wildfire engulfed the coastal resort town of Mati, near Nea Makri, destroying dozens of buildings and killing 102 people.
