Russian infectious disease specialist Alexander Gorelov, deputy director for scientific work of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor and Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, explained the lack of a cure for COVID-19 against the background of the availability of vaccines.
Gorelov explained that the development of any drug requires a fairly long period and huge investments. At the beginning of the pandemic, scientists assumed that the coronavirus would move into the category of seasonal infections, so the pharmaceutical industry focused on the rapid development of vaccines, the scientist quotes. “Work in this direction is underway, but, in addition to creating the substance itself, you need to select the concentration, dose, so the path is longer than when creating vaccines. Research will continue further, but if the virus becomes seasonal, they will stop.”
Gorelov drew attention to the fact that any disease is better prevented than cured, so vaccination was a priority. In addition, there are infections against which special treatment methods have not yet been developed, but vaccinations help to successfully cope with the problem – these are rabies and measles.
