Greek tourism – respect

Greek tourism is showing clear signs of resilience and recovery despite this summer’s challenges.

According to the latest figures from Eurocontrol, the European Aviation Safety Agency, Athens International Airport ranks among the top 10, serving the most arrivals and departures daily between 5-11 August.

What Eurocontrol data show
Eleftherios Venizelos Airport has the second smallest drop in flights compared to the same period in 2019, around 15%, while some of the most important hubs in Europe, such as the airports of Frankfurt, Madrid, Paris and Amsterdam, show a decline , fluctuating between 28% and 37%.

Eurocontrol data show that Greece was 7th in terms of air traffic on 11 August, behind countries with much larger populations such as Germany, France and Turkey, and even had the second highest air traffic growth rate (+ 7%) in recent two weeks. Only the United Kingdom (+ 12%) posted the fastest growth in arrivals and departures in the 14-day period.

The parallel “rise” of Greece and the UK is not accidental, as Ryanair and easyJet routes between the two countries were a key factor in the increase in the total number of flights of these airlines in the two weeks to 11 August.

Financial Times: Greece wins the fight to restore tourism
The Financial Times article says Greece emerges victorious in the fight to restore tourism in Europe (data based on analysis by specialist company OAG).

While seats on flights scheduled for August in Europe were reduced by 31% compared to the corresponding month of 2019, according to OAG, seats on flights to Greece were increased by 2%. This means that August passenger traffic exceeds the record year for Greek tourism.
