The first group of Russian tourists arrived in Pyongyang yesterday. North Korea’s border has reopened for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic, following nearly four years of isolation.
97 Russians will take part in the 4-day trip. The head of the travel agency Vostok-Intour, which organized the trip, Natalya Zinina explained to the NK News website that the group is going to visit North Korea from February 9 to 12. tells CNN Greece:
“Russian tourists will first stop in Pyongyang and then go to the Masikryong ski resort, located near the city of Wonsan on the country’s east coast.”
Moscow and Pyongyang have strengthened their relations recently. In September 2023, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited the Russian Far East and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin there. USA and South Korea then statedthat Pyongyang supplied weapons to Russia for use in Ukraineviolating a number of UN resolutions directed against the DPRK.
After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, travel for Russians to Europe and the United States has become more difficult. According to the Russian news agency TASS, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated last year that North Korea could be proposed as a tourist destination.
