The European Union imposed a ban on the import of Russian oil by Poland and Germany

Last summer, the European Union allowed Poland and Germany, as an exception, to pump oil from Russia through the northern branch of the Druzhba pipeline.

In 2022, these countries imported about 480 thousand barrels of Russian oil per day. However, as writes Bloomberg, “Friendship” is over: EU banned Poland and Germany from importing Russian oil.

While both countries have stopped oil imports via the pipeline, the EU is now planning to do so officially. The proposal to cut off supplies will be included in the 11 EU sanctions package. As the agency notes, an exception for supplies via the Druzhba pipeline will be made only for Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Negotiations are underway, as the changes need the support of all EU member states to enter into force. Bloomberg notes that the official cessation of supplies from Germany and Poland will be largely a symbolic move. However, this will force several refineries to use more complex logistics to access other sources of oil.
