How much money will be allocated for healthcare in 2023

Greek Finance Minister Christos Staikouras announced the strengthening of the healthcare system in 2023.

An increase in funding for the health sector is planned for 2023 from the budget, where it is planned to allocate 11.9 billion euros for health care from the expenditures of ministries and relevant state institutions in the new year. This amount is close to the European average, as it reaches 6% of GDP.

Minister of Finance Christos Staikouras cited relevant data: funding from the Ministry of Health alone is projected at 5.2 billion euros, not counting funding for the fight against covid. This year, spending by the Ministry of Health, including the pandemic budget, has reached 5.6 billion euros, as an additional 296 million euros has been allocated to hospitals to cover their increased costs.

Also, for 2023, public investment expenditures are envisaged in the amount of 63 million euros, which is almost twice as much as in 2018. At the same time, it is planned to modernize the medical care of the Civil Defense Service, in connection with which additional financing of €595 million will be provided through the European Investment Bank to protect the country from fires, floods, earthquakes and health risks.

Talking about funding through the Recovery Fund ΕΣΠΑthe official noted that reforms and investments to improve the efficiency of the healthcare system are moving forward, such as strengthening and improving primary health care (PHC), hospitals, prevention and digital healthfor which more than one billion euros have been allocated. In this context, there are already €12.1 million home care program, modernization of hospitals in the amount of 32.5 million euros with a radiotherapy center in “Sotiria” and the department of cell therapy and genetics in “Papanicolaou” in the amount of 7.4 million euros, as well as support for primary care in the amount of 271.6 million euros. These four activities have already been assigned to the Hellenic Fund’s Strategic Contracts Department.
