Scholz called for European Union enlargement and reforms

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz calls to reform and expand the European Union – this will significantly increase its influence.

Speaking at a meeting of European Social Democrats, writes Evropeyskaya Pravda, referring to TagesschauScholz stated:

EU, which includes 27, 30, 36 states, as well as more than 500 million free and equal citizens, can further strengthen its influence in the world. I am committed to EU enlargement. Further eastward enlargement of the EU is a victory for all of us.”

The European Union currently has 27 members. From the very beginning of his activity as Chancellor of Germany, writes edition, Scholz made the expansion of the European Union one of the main directions of his foreign policy. It became even more relevant after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which became a candidate for EU membership at the beginning of the summer.

The German chancellor is convinced that the candidates for accession – Ukraine, Moldova, the countries of the Western Balkans and later Georgia – must meet all the necessary criteria. Scholz believes that with EU enlargement, the problems of smaller member states should not be ignored:

“Also in the future every country should be heard with its problems, anything else would be a betrayal of the European idea.”

Scholz is convinced that in order to avoid blockages, there should be a gradual transition in foreign and financial policy to the approval of decisions by a majority vote, and not by consensus, as is the case today, and called for reforms in the EU.

He promised to continue to support Ukraine in countering Russian aggression, noting in his speech. “Russia’s brutal invasion is an attack on the European security order,” Scholz was quoted as saying by Evropeyskaya Pravda.
