Brazil and Spain recorded the first victims of monkeypox.
The first death from monkeypox (outside the African continent) was registered in Brazil on Friday, reports Reuters. The victim was a 41-year-old Brazilian who, according to the Ministry of Health, had a weakened immune system and suffered from lymphoma. The first monkeypox death in the Americas occurred less than a week after the World Health Organization (WHO) announced disease outbreak.
Earlier in Spain, after contracting monkeypox, a person died, the first in the country and in Europe, referring to the Spanish Ministry of Health reports El Pais. The authorities confirmed this fact only yesterday.
In Spain, 4298 people have been officially confirmed infected, the vast majority (4081) are men. A total of 120 people were hospitalized, or 3.2% of cases. The average age of those infected is 37 years (from 10 months to 88 years).
Experts from the World Health Organization note that there is practically no chance of stopping the spread of infection. Peak outbreak of monkeypox may be registered after a few months.
Having curbed the coronavirus, at least temporarily, the EU is rushing to fight monkeypox. And not that this virus is deadly, but for immunocompromised people, children and pregnant women, it can pose a certain threat. Brussels announces uniform protection against monkeypox and signs agreement on the purchase of vaccines.
Earlier, our publication warned: in the summer, you should be especially careful in epidemiological terms. Increased caution should be exercised by travelers, especially when visiting areas with a high incidence of monkeypox.
