Bicycles "without Borders"

The Hellenic Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is conducting an information campaign aimed at encouraging the use of bicycles – the codification of the rules regarding their use and transportation in public transport.

An information application developed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in cooperation with STASY was opened at the tram stop pl. Syntagma by Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Michalis Papadopoulos, together with Σταθερών Συγκοινωνιών (ΣΤΑΣΥ) President Haris Damascos and ΣΤΑΣΥ Managing Director Athanasios Kottaras

The information is posted on the official website of the ministry in Greek and English at the link: https://www.yme.gov.gr/metafores/podilata.

Thematic blocks

The following thematic sections are available on the site, where the visitor can be informed about the following:

  • Rules for using a bicycle in public transport: METRO, TRAM, BUS, RAILWAY.
  • European cycling routes in Greece: Eurovelo network.
  • Cycling on the road (rules of the road).
  • Actions by municipalities to promote the use of bicycles.

The passenger who “scans” the QR code on the sticker with his mobile phone will be “transferred” to the website of the Ministry of Transport. There you can find any information about the use of bicycles and your rights as a cyclist.

The stickers will be placed inside and outside the doors of the last trains on metro and tram lines 1, 2 and 3.

At the same time, from June 2, the video of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport campaign on the use of bicycles will be shown on screens inside trains, as well as at stations and stops.

Strategy

On the occasion of the launch of the app, Deputy Transport Minister Michalis Papadopoulos said: “The bicycle could be the protagonist of the transition to softer forms of urban mobility. It is economical, environmentally friendly and ideal for short distances in cities with many health benefits. The “I Cycle Everywhere” campaign run by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in cooperation with ΣΤΑΣΥ is part of the overall strategy we are following to increase the use of bicycles. We connect cycling routes with vehicles, improve infrastructure for safe cycling, create incentives for daily cycling and promote cycling tourism. We are creating a friendlier environment for cyclists with a plan, a vision and concrete actions.”
