The former mayor of Bucharest, convicted of corruption, is arrested in Athens on the basis of an international warrant.
Sorin Oprescu, 70, who served as mayor of the Romanian capital from 2008 to 2015, was convicted by Romanian courts of bribery, creating a criminal organization and abuse of power.
Last Friday, the Bucharest Court of Appeal sentenced Opresca to 10 years and 8 months in prison for corruption.
According to Romanian media, he left the country about two weeks ago, before the court’s decision.
In 2015, Oprescu was accused of receiving 25,000 euros from the former director of the administration of the Bucharest cemetery.
When later, during a search of his house, significant amounts of money were found, he could not prove where the cash came from.
Details about the circumstances of Oprescu’s arrest in Athens are unknown.
