Fine… for slow driving

Greek law not only provides fines for drivers who speed, but also punishes those who drive slowly.

Many times we see drivers moving very slowly on highways and expressways, and we also see many low-powered vehicles on the country’s roads.

The Code of Road Traffic (Κ.Ο.Κ.) specifies maximum speed limits on motorways and expressways of 130 km/h and 110 km/h, respectively, for passenger cars, and also specifies minimum speed limit. The minimum speed on the motorway is 70 km/h, which means that if we are driving a vehicle that cannot safely exceed this speed, it should not follow it. The reason is simple and is the safety of all road users.

In addition, this means that the driver of a three-wheeled vehicle, as well as cyclists (including electric bikes or electric scooters) cannot travel on these roads even for a while, as they endanger both the driver and other road users, moving at considerable speed, writes carandmotor.gr.

Minimum speed limit signs are blue, while maximum speed limit signs are red and white. According to the COC, “the driver of a vehicle is obliged not to interfere with the free movement of other vehicles if he is moving at an unusual slowness without a significant reason.”

As such, it is reported that anyone driving below the minimum speed limit is subject to an administrative fine of €80.
