Three houses evacuated in East Attica

Three small apartment buildings in eastern Attica have been evacuated as they are gradually swallowed up by subsidence following heavy rains, state broadcaster ERT reported on Saturday.

Three buildings are located next to each other on the banks of a stream in the village of Neos-Voudzas, a suburb of the port city of Rafina. Just above Mati, Neos Voudzas was the epicenter of the tragic 2018 wildfire that destroyed hundreds of homes, burned thousands of trees and killed 103 people.

Since the trees stopped holding back water, every heavy rainstorm has flooded the area, causing water to wash away the soil under the foundations of three buildings, according to ERT.

Rafina Mayor Vangelis Burnous told ERT that studies are currently underway to determine if the problem will spread to a wider area. He added that there are proven facts: the previous authorities issued licenses for the construction of dozens of sites that did not pass the geological survey.
