Unprecedented hail in Santorini and Paros (video)

An unprecedented hailstorm hit the island of Santorini on Thursday, which locals describe as “like stones falling from the sky.”

Heavy hail and rain damaged vehicles and damaged agriculture, and temperatures at the popular summer resort dropped to 1 degree Celsius, an extremely rare occurrence on the island.

The storm also disabled an airport runway on the island.

Local authorities closed schools for the remainder of the day and sent students and faculty home for safety reasons. Considering that in Greek schools (in the south of the country) there is no heating as a class, the decision was quite reasonable.

According to local media reports, two women and one child were evacuated through a kitchen window when their basement flooded.

The severe weather front also affected other islands of the Cyclades, such as Paros, where heavy rain and hail turned the streets into rivers.

Due to the rains, the rivers swelled and flooded several areas of the island.
