Belarus: details of the conspiracy against the president

The Russian Federal Security Service has revealed details of the planned assassination attempt on Belarusian President Lukashenko and the preparation of a military coup in Belarus, RIA Novosti reports.

According to the Public Relations Center of the Russian FSB, arrest operation lawyer Yuri Zenkovich, who has citizenship of Belarus and the United States, and political scientist Alexander Feduta, a citizen of Belarus, was carried out by the FSB of Russia and the Belarusian KGB.

According to preliminary data, Feduta and Zenkovich were developing a plan to eliminate Lukashenka, capture his children and a military coup in the country, scheduled for May 9. Earlier, the president of the republic announced the arrest of a group of people who, with the participation of the American special services, intended to arrange a “capture” of his children and eliminate Lukashenka himself. According to the security service, the scheme of actions was developed according to the proven scenario of “color revolutions”, with the involvement of local and Ukrainian nationalists and with support from the United States.

After visiting Poland and the United States for consultations, Feduta and Zenkovich made an appointment with Belarusian Armed Forces generals supporting the plan at a Moscow restaurant. All the participants in the discussion of the upcoming events agreed that for the successful implementation of their plans it is necessary to “decapitate” the country’s leadership, that is, to physically remove the president.

The ultimate goal of the actions of the conspirators was to change the constitutional order. It was planned to abolish the presidency and put the National Reconciliation Committee at the head of the country’s government. Zenkovich planned to become the “curator” of the Belarusian parliament and the legal system, Feduta – to engage in political reform and ideological work.

Among the alleged actions of the conspirators on the day of the coup are the shutdown of the power system of Belarus, the seizure of television centers and radio, the blocking of law enforcement and security structures loyal to the president. The armed formations were to begin the active phase of the coup. The message from the Public Relations Center of the Russian FSB says:

It is noteworthy that the oppositionists chose the day of the Victory Parade in Minsk on May 9 as the date of the military coup. After documenting the meeting, the conspirators were detained by Russian security agencies and handed over to their Belarusian partners.

At present, the investigative bodies of Belarus are investigating the case brought against Feduta and Zenkovich under Art. 357 of the Criminal Code of Belarus – a conspiracy or other actions committed with the aim of seizing state power.
