Accident in Gavdos: Corina could have been saved

A shocking statement was made by a forensic expert about Corina, who died in an accident on the island of Gavdos: “She could have been saved.”

About how the tragedy occurred in Gavdos, which cost the life of young Corina, was told by her companion and the driver of the car that fell into the abyss.

“The girl’s injuries were not fatal. The victim could live from two to two and a half hours with a ruptured lung. If she had been taken to the hospital on time, she would have definitely survived, ”said forensic scientist Stamatis Belivanis.

Pointing to the tragic absence of the EKAB helicopter in Crete, the specialist says that in the event of a car accident in Gavdos, the injuries of the unfortunate Corina could be treated even without surgery!

“After using hemopneumothorax (which is available in the intensive care unit of each hospital), the student would be alive today,” says the medical examiner. However, fractured ribs gradually caused one lung to stop functioning, while internal bleeding caused the slow and martyrdom of a 28-year-old young woman.

“Everyone was informed by 5:57 and did not start rescuing! The girl was completely helpless. We lawyers call it criminal negligence, ”said the victim’s family lawyer Filippos Skabardonis.

So what happened early last Sunday morning?

Fire brigade sources say that as soon as they were notified at 6:00 am, rescuers were dispatched to the scene. However, they could not get close to the victim. Later on a Greek Navy boat from Paleochora, Chania, four firefighters arrived with the necessary equipment, who descended the cliff and approached the car.

The island’s doctor could not go down to the girl to give her first aid. At the same time, according to available information, he gave the order not to move the wounded, having previously notified the authorities about this.

To save time, the rescuers did not call a helicopter from Athens, but asked the army air force from Heraklion, according to ANT1. Thus, the helicopter arrived after 10:00 and took on board only the wounded driver. And when a second helicopter, Agusta Bell, flew to the scene a little later, to help, the student was already dead.

Heartbroken parents do not believe what happened and demand that the technicians give a clear answer: why the car’s handbrake failed.

Death at Gavdos

About how the tragedy occurred in Gavdos, which cost the life of young Corina, was told by her companion and the driver of the car that fell into the abyss.

40-year-old friend of the student G. Gasparakis is currently in the hospital, where he is still undergoing treatment. “I have no words, I can only imagine what will happen to her parents,” he said in an interview with ANT1.

Recalling the events of that terrible day, he says: “We were having fun and fooling around, it was a wonderful evening … We were eating barbecue in the car when the handbrake failed. The car has dragged 80 meters. “

According to a participant in the tragedy and an eyewitness, when the car finally stopped (noting how endless the moment of falling into the abyss was), “he decided to get Corina out of the car.”

“She was very ill, her leg hurt, I threw a blanket over her that was in the car, found my cell phone, it had more than 5 percent charge. I could not call the number 112 – I did not catch the network (there was no telephone signal). I barely climbed upstairs to call and call for help, ”he continued, explaining that he got up barefoot and with broken ribs, overcoming the pain. “Korina was conscious, we talked to her somewhere between 10: 30-11: 00. I would like to die in her place, ”he said.

As it became known, the driver of the car called 166 at 5:52. “I said that I needed air transport and dropped the geolocation data,” the man said, noting that he immediately called a doctor, who, according to him, arrived at the scene in 10-12 minutes. However, “a doctor is a doctor, not a climber,” he emphasized and noted how difficult it was for a physician to descend from a cliff to provide first aid to the victim.

We will remind, as previously wrote “Russian Athens”, early in the morning on Sunday 11/04, a tragedy occurred on the island of Gavdos: a car fell into the abyss, a young woman died.

The doctor and rescuers managed to get down from the cliff to where the car got stuck. Alas, having gone downstairs, the experts stated the death of the student.

After an investigation and according to the driver’s testimony, it turned out that the couple was in the car with the handbrake on. At some critical moment, he refused, and the car fell down
