EU Commissioner on the timing of Sputnik V deliveries to Europe

Thierry Breton, Commissioner for Internal Market Affairs, who oversees vaccination policy at the EC, assessed the possible timing of the production of the Russian Sputnik V in Europe.

Breton said that the approval of a Russian drug in the European Union cannot be compared with the possibility of its production in the required quantities – these are not equivalent concepts, Der Spiegel reports.

The study by the European Medicines Agency of the Russian vaccine cannot mean that it will be used immediately – the increase in production capacity could take several months, Breton said:

“For our goal – to vaccinate all Europeans as much as possible in the summer – Sputnik V will simply come too late.”

At the end of last month, Thierry Breton said that if the Russian vaccine is successfully tested in the near future, that is, weeks or months, and the method of its production in the EU is found immediately, then the first batch of doses will be released only after 10-12 months.
