Santorini: Preventive measures taken in Thira and Thirasia due to risk of landslides


A joint ministerial decision has been published regarding the introduction of controlled access measures for residents and visitors to parts of the islands of Thira and Thirasia.

According to the statement, following the approval by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection of a contract worth €300,000 with the Southern Aegean region for the implementation of maintenance projects and the first intervention in Santorini, and after the approval of the OASP for the release of funds in the amount of €230,000 for the preparation of the study a Joint Ministerial Decision (JMA) was published regarding taking controlled access measures to certain parts of the island.

Series planned medium- and long-term projects to reduce the risk of landslideswhich will be implemented based on the research of Professor Efthimios Lekkas of the Department of Dynamic Tectonics, Applied Geology and Disaster Management and EKPA. Temporary traffic restrictions to avoid the risk of landslides for the period from 06/01/2024 to 10/31/2024:

a) In the village of Amoudi, the movement and passage of all types of vehicles on the municipal road from the intersection of the Oyas ring road to the port of Amoudi is prohibited. Food service vehicles are excluded between 5am and 10am.
b) In the Gulf of Fira (the old port of Fira), it is decided that the disembarkation and departure of cruise ship passengers are controlled by the competent port authorities. In addition, the authorities are authorized to take measures to control the arrival and departure of all types of ships from and to Thirasia, Palaia and Nea Kameni.
c) In Ormos Athinios (the new port of Fira), it was decided to take measures to regulate the traffic when disembarking vehicles with priority disembarking of commercial vehicles, and then buses and trucks, so that there is no traffic load on the street, both during disembarkation and during departure of scheduled buses ferries.

Posting warning signs in three languages ​​(Greek, English and French) about the existence of a risk of landslides in the following areas of Thira and Thirasia:

  • in the settlement of Amoudi along the municipal road from the intersection of the Oia ring road towards the port of Amoudi,
  • on the footpath from Amoudi to Oia,
  • in Ormos Armeni on a paved footpath from Oia village to Ormos Armeni,
  • in Firostefani on the edge of the caldera,
  • to Ormos Fira (old port of Fira),
  • to Ormos Athinios (new port of Fira) on the road from the new port of Fira to the Fira-Akrotiri road,
  • on the island of Thirassia – Corfu Bay, as well as on the walking trail leading from the bay to the village of Thirassia.

The competent authorities ensure the implementation of prohibitions on access and approach, as well as the conditions of controlled access from the date of the decision until 31.10.2024 in order to protect residents and visitors during the tourist season.
