Today in the Athens district of Kallithea, in the park near the monument to the Soviet soldier, events dedicated to Victory Day were held.

On Victory Day, the Russian Ambassador to Greece A.M. Maslov and defense attache Major General A.S. Prikhodko in the Athens region of Kallithea laid a wreath at the monument to Soviet soldiers who died for the freedom and independence of Greece in 1941 – 1944.

On May 9, 2024, on the occasion of the 79th anniversary of the victory, the Consul General of Russia in Thessaloniki V.V. Brednev laid a wreath at the monument to Russian soldiers at the Zeitenlik Allied Cemetery, where 10 Soviet partisans – fighters of the Greek anti-fascist Resistance movement – are buried.
The events began at 10 a.m. and continued with short breaks until the time of publication of the material (5 p.m.).
Throughout the day, residents of Athens come to the monument to pay tribute to relatives and friends who died during the Second World War. At about 5 p.m., a memorial service was held at the monument in memory of those killed in World War II.
The St. George ribbon was lined with flowers on the wreath of the Coordination Council.
The event is attended by a representative of the Kallithea City Hall, Chenkelidis Vasilis. Member of Parliament from the Helliniki Party Lysi, lawyer Konstantinos Dedes, and former minister Panagiotis Lafazanis. Due to fears of provocation, the event was not announced in advance.
The monument by the famous Russian sculptor Vyacheslav Klykov, depicting a fallen Soviet soldier holding a rifle in his hands and his Greek mother mourning him, was erected in Athens in 2005 in a park on Singru Avenue. The monument was erected near the site of the death of three Soviet soldiers. History has preserved only their names – Nikolai, Ivan and Alexey. They were captured, in 1943 they managed to escape, they joined the ranks of the National Liberation Army ELAS. In 1944, along with 25 residents of Kallithea, among whom were ELAS fighters and civilians, the Soviet military were shot.
In Greece, Victory Day is celebrated in other cities of Greece – Volos, Katerini, Thessaloniki, Kozani, Stylida (Lamia), Corfu, Patras, Mytilene, Heraklion, Larisa, Rhodes.
