Russia destroyed the Trypilska Thermal Power Plant, which supplied Kyiv and 3 regions with electricity

In the early morning of April 11, Russia launched a massive drone and missile attack on Ukrainian energy facilities. It is reported that the Trypillya thermal power plant was destroyed, which supplied electricity not only to Kyiv and the region, but also to the neighboring Cherkassy and Zhytomyr regions.

In addition to power plants, at night Russia attacked substations in the Odessa, Kharkov, Zaporozhye, Lvov and Kyiv regions. It is reported that 2 suicide bombers and 4-5 missiles broke through to the target. Trypillya Thermal Power Plant, which until today was the largest supplier of electricity to the three regions, is completely destroyed. This was confirmed by Centrenergo PJSC, to which the TPP reports.

“The scale of destruction is terrible. Money cannot estimate this. This is the biggest challenge for us in the entire history of the enterprise. But I am convinced that we can cope with it,” said Andrei Gota, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of PJSC. “As of today, Centrenergo has lost 100% of its generation,” the company added. “All the workers who were on shift during the shelling are alive,” Gota said.

In Ukrainka, after the destruction of the Trypilska Thermal Power Plant, emergency power and water shutdown schedules are being introduced from 2 p.m., local residents told Strana. “In the morning they called us and told us to close the windows and warned that they would turn off the light and water, and there would be no hot water at all. They said that cold water would be available today from 18:00 to 21:00, and tomorrow from 09:00 to 10:00 and from 12:00 to 14:00,” says Maria.

According to the woman, she woke up at 05:00 from the explosions and immediately realized that the thermal power plant had been hit, since she lives nearby. In the morning there was a lot of burning, the windows in the apartment were black. There was nothing to breathe. At the moment, the fire has already been extinguished; the smell of burning is also not noticeable.

Residents of Ukrainka are massively stocking up on drinking water in local pump rooms after the arrival at the Trypilska Thermal Power Plant and the announced power and water outages. “The water was turned off in the morning for about an hour, then turned on, but it was impossible to drink it because it was black. They say that after lunch there will be no water at all,” says Ekaterina. According to the woman, water in stores is also sold out very quickly and there are huge queues.

Let us note that even on the eve of the new missile attack on the Russian Federation, Centerenergo stated that the Trypillya Thermal Power Plant was protected “100%” from missile debris and downed drones. They oversaw the work on strengthening power plants in the Ministry of Infrastructure, as well as in the agency headed by Nayem. Previously, the government reported allocating 9.7 billion hryvnia ($250 million) to protect power plants from Russian attacks.

By striking the Ukrainian energy sector, in particular thermal power plants, Russia is laying the foundation for a new offensive, writes The Wall Street Journal.

In this way, the Russians want to deplete Ukraine’s air defense and divert the resources of the Ukrainian Armed Forces from the front line. Unlike last winter, the Russians began to destroy not only the network, but also the electricity generation itself. According to the publication, the situation with air defense in Ukraine may become critical by the summer. The chronology of the loss of one of the largest generating companies in Ukraine looks like this:

  1. On July 25, 2022, Russian troops captured the Uglegorsk thermal power plant in the Donetsk region;
  2. On March 22, 2024, a missile strike completely destroyed the Zmievskaya Thermal Power Plant in the Kharkov region;
  3. On April 11 at 5 a.m., a missile strike completely destroyed the Trypilska Thermal Power Plant in the Kyiv region.

Attacks on gas storage facilities.

In addition to energy facilities, two underground gas storage facilities were also attacked this morning, Naftogaz reports. It is stated that they continue to work. The employees were not injured. At night, 8 MiG-31s hit a strategic target near the border with Poland with hypersonic Daggers. “Daggers” from three sides and 4 X-101 missiles attacked a target in the Stryi area of the Lviv region. Probably one of the affected underground gas storage facilities is in Stryi.

At night, missiles and UAVs attacked two energy facilities in the Lviv region. This is a gas distribution facility in the Stryisky district and an electrical substation in Chervonogradsky. Fires broke out there, there were no casualties or injuries, Governor Kozitsky said.

Let us note that this is not the first time that Stryi has become the target of Russian attacks. Gas facilities have been shelled there before (probably, we are talking about the largest underground gas storage facility in Ukraine).
