National Geographic: The top two Greek islands in 2024

There is an island in Greece to suit every traveler if you know where to look.

Milos, known as the “Island of Flowers”, and Tinos, famous for its gastronomy, are included in the list of the best Greek islands to visit in summer 2024, according to National Geographic.

About Milos the publication says: “A volcanic island of flowers with rock formations in shades of red, yellow and dazzling white. Equally striking are the doors and windows that decorate the traditional Sirmata (Σύρματα) – huts that can only be found around Milos and neighboring Kimolos, carved into the soft volcanic rocks by fishermen who shelter their boats there for the winter. Some of them were later turned into quaint houses right on the shore, right next to the water. Visit unique catacombs and an ancient theater. Here you can also see a copy of the statue of Aphrodite de Milo, which adorns the place where the original was found.”

Tinos is featured in National Geographic as follows: “In recent years, Cycladic Tinos has become famous as an island of gastronomy. Thanks to its fertile soil and the resulting abundance of local products, it is a magnet for chefs who prefer to work on the island rather than in Athens during the summer season.

Tinos Food Paths, The gastronomic festival, held every year in the second week of May, marks the beginning of the season of indulgence in tastes. Join the summer celebration: start your morning with bright Greek coffee and crispy bougatsa/croissant. Continue the day with a plate of fish soup and end with a tasting of local delicacies.”

The publication also contains references to the islands of the Ionian Sea, Dodecanese, Sporades and Cyclades, which include Santorini, Syros, Sifnos and Naxos.

National Geographic writes: “From the culinary islands of the Cyclades to the mysterious ruins of the Dodecanese, each of the six major Greek island groups has its own distinct character. But look closer and you'll discover that there is more in common than in dividing them: there are secluded towns beloved by local gourmets, hidden coves and beaches, but above all, natural splendor that has struck the heart of artists and poets.”
