A double strong earthquake of 5.7 magnitude was felt today at 09:10 in Attica and the Peloponnese (video)

A strong earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale near Ilia, east of Strofades, has alarmed residents in many areas. What do seismologists say?

Tremors were felt in Attica, Achaia, Ilia, Messenia and other areas of the Peloponnese. On the website of the Geodynamic Institute there are two reports of earthquakes of the same magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale, with a difference of one minute.

The earthquake reportedly occurred 239 km northwest of Athens. The epicenter is located in the Ionian Sea, 14 km east of Strofades. According to the initial automatic decision of the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale.

According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale, and the epicenter was offshore, 36 kilometers west of Filiatra, Messinia. OSP President Efthimios Lekkas noted:

“About 20 kilometers from the Peloponnese mainland. The earthquake was felt over a large area. Even in Agrinio. Essentially, it was on the Greek arc. This is not associated with faults directed towards the Peloponnese, which is very positive. This earthquake is, however, quite strong. There is information that in Strofadia we have minor damage to the existing monastery there. We are monitoring this phenomenon, but I do not think there is any cause for concern for the surrounding areas.”

“This is not a cause for concern,” says seismologist Akis Tselentis. According to him, others will follow, of lesser intensity, while, according to his estimates, this was the main earthquake. “It was felt at a great distance due to the depth of the epicenter,” he noted.

The double strong earthquake that occurred on Friday 29 March in Strofades prompted the decision of the Deputy Governor to close schools purely as a precaution. This made a decision Deputy Governor Ilia Nikos Korovesis, reports ilialive. Those children whom parents cannot pick up will remain in the courtyard of their school under the supervision of teachers.
