March's full moon, also known as the Worm Moon, will grace the night sky.
This is the first full moon of spring, which will be special because it will bring with it the phenomenon of the “moon illusion”: the Earth's satellite will become larger and darker a few minutes after sunset. The full moon in March 2024 will be spectacular because the moon will be closer to our planet than usual, meaning it will appear larger in size.
According to Almanac magazine, the phenomenon is the “lunar illusion,” in which the Moon appears larger because we can more easily compare it to objects closer to Earth. Conversely, when the moon is further away, it appears smaller to us.
Like most full moons, it was given its name by Indian tribes. The names of full moons reflect the characteristics of the lunar months. For example, in Europe and America, the full moon in March is called the Worm Moon, because at this time earthworms begin to appear in the soil that thaws after a long winter. By the way, with the appearance of worms, rooks and other birds begin to fly in – a real symbol of spring! Another sign of the coming of spring is March equinox, which will happen in a couple of weeks after the March full moon. From an astronomical point of view, the March equinox marks the onset of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.
