In Slovakia the number has increased attacks bears on people, the consequences of which are severe injuries and even death.

Authorities have sounded the alarm after the death of a 31-year-old Belarusian citizen who fell to her death while trying to escape from a brown bear in the Low Tatras mountains. A woman and her partner were walking in the woods when they were attacked by a bear. According to the man, they ran away in different directions. The woman’s body was later discovered by a sniffer dog shortly after she called for help.

Following the Sunday incident on March 17, two people were taken to hospital and are being treated after being attacked by a bear in the Slovak town of Liptovsky Mikulas. Photos of his voyage through the city streets caused a sensation on the Internet. As a result of the bear attack, a 49-year-old woman suffered a shoulder injury and a 72-year-old man suffered a head injury.

After the incident, the police were immediately mobilized to drive the bear out of the city and into the forest. Videos posted on social media show the bear running down the street. In one of them, he rushed at a man standing on the sidewalk.

There have been several bear attacks in Slovakia in recent years, including a fatal one in 2021, the first in the country in a century.

New environmental rules in Central and Eastern Europe since 1989 have helped bears return to their natural habitat throughout the Carpathian mountain range, which stretches from Romania to western Ukraine and then to Slovakia and Poland.
