An 84-year-old man had eyelid surgery for… 32,781 euros

An 84-year-old Greek man who recently lost his wife found a “tempting offer” from an aesthetic center for eyelid surgery to improve his vision. And instead of receiving practically free services (as promised), he ended up with a debt of 32,781 euros.

The story of an elderly man who, as it turned out, owed 32,000 euros for eyelid surgery is told by the publication Kathimerini, wanting to show how easily people fall into the traps of “interesting offers”.

Mr. Petros lost his wife. Seeing how the old man was toiling and languishing, his children tried to convince him to start looking for a hobby, to somehow “occupy himself.”

At that moment, the widower came across an advertisement for an aesthetic center on Facebook. The elderly man saw this as an opportunity to improve his vision, as he suffered from ptosis (drooping eyelids), and also as an opportunity to get out of the house.

So, on January 4, he arrived at the beauty salon, the girl served him with a smile and explained how the sessions would take place. Before this, nothing seemed strange. The employee became aware of the problem Mr. Petros was having and provided him with a large amount of information. In the end, he even told him that he could use some other medical services that the company was providing at that time, supposedly free of charge, that would relieve his body pain. In fact she told him that he will be able to visit the beauty center whenever he wants without any financial burden.

For this reason, the employee asked Mr. Petros for his credit and debit cards in order to register them in the company system and activate other offers, and then signed the documents given to him. He also signed it below.

On January 8, 12, 15 and 22, Mr. Petros began regularly visiting the beauty center. On January 23 the first shock came. A man who came to a beauty center was first told that he owed 1,000 euros for medical supervision, which he received as an additional service (which, as it turned out, was not part of the treatment program). The shocked old man asked for an explanation and was told that the duty is real and everything is done for his own good. He told them that he did not have this amount with him, he would go home and bring the money.

Another employee then advised him to take a taxi home with a companion. The next session was also scheduled for January 25, but for this he needed to have 500 euros in cash. On the 25th, the elderly patient decided to complete the sessions and go to the beauty salon for the last time, saying that he was not ready for the high cost of the procedures.

A few days later, he informed his son about all this and he, alarmed by what he heard, connected to his father’s bank accounts and saw that during this time he had wrote off a total of 32,781 euros.

The son immediately contacted a lawyer and filed a lawsuit against the company, where it was discovered that Mr. Petros didn’t look at what he was signing. After this trap, the old man became even more withdrawn and was again overcome by intense grief after the death of his wife. Among other things, he was found to be suffering from recent memory problems and depression.
