The Greek Parliament adopted a law on private universities

The roll-call and clause-by-clause voting in the Greek Parliament on the bill on private universities ended with the following result: 159 deputies voted in favor, 129 voted against, and 11 people’s representatives abstained.

Thus, the scandalous bill, which caused debate in society and numerous protests on Greek streets and squares, accepted.

Voting set a record for the longest duration. It was helped to establish it by the former Speaker of Parliament Zoe Konstantopoulou, who, together with three fellow party members from the Freedom Course, decided to read the 205 articles of the bill one by one before deciding how they would vote. It took about two hours just to read it!

Voting was by name and item by item. The new law will allow the opening of non-state universities in Greece. After its adoption, Education Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis read out his speech: “After decades of debate, a great historical change begins tonight…”

Meanwhile, the center of the Greek capital was seething. Seventeen thousand young people came to the parliament building. Molotov cocktails were used, the police used chemicals and made active arrests. An investigation into the video is already underway. The chaotic process, of course, combined with the advocacy of women’s rights (March 8th!). Therefore, it became even more difficult to understand the situation…
