The Ministry of Defense is considering passing a law to conscript Greek women into military service, Defense Minister Nikos Dendias said at an event of the Greek National Defense General Staff to mark International Women’s Day on Friday.
“The vast majority of Greek society believes in an army of citizens, believes in an armed citizen.”, said Dendias. He noted that Greece is moving within a geopolitical framework: “Where we face a threat from a country that has a great numerical advantage over us, and which by the middle of the century will approach or exceed 100 million people compared to our 11-12 million.”
“Thus simple arithmetic requires an army of citizens, as well as the ideological view that an armed citizen defending country, home and ideals is what has always characterized Hellenism since the founding of city-states.” – he added.
Dendias said that in the coming weeks, the ministry and the armed forces leadership will present some initial thoughts on how Greece can leverage the country’s human capital, not only at the officer level, but also at the voluntary recruit level.
