How many women are there in the Armed Forces of Ukraine?

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has released information on the number of Ukrainian women serving in the army. Data for 2024.

On March 8, the number of women in the Ukrainian army became known – these are 45,587 representatives of the weak half of humanity. However, such a definition is hardly suitable for them, who experience all the hardships of army service and bravely destroy the enemies who come to their land. According to the law, they can only be sent to the front line at the personal request of the women themselves.

And their number is increasing – in 2014 this figure was more than 16.5 thousand, and in 2023 – more than 43.4 thousand, reports “UP”. Among women military personnel, 13,487 have the status of combatants, and more than 4 thousand defenders are currently in the combat area. In total, in 2024, the total number of women in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (not only military personnel) reached 62 thousand. In 2014, this figure was 49 thousand. The Defense Forces say: “Thank you for your contribution to the victory!”

Last year, the Military Media Center reported that there were more than 5,000 women in combat zones. Many Ukrainian women want to get to the front line, writes euronews. According to media reports, of the more than 400,000 soldiers serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, women make up approximately 20%.

Thousands of women have found their place in the military, and their numbers continue to increase. Alexandra, for example, worked in a bakery before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Now she is a sniper. The woman says: “I see my enemy, I see the occupier who came to our land to destroy our state, our people. Nothing more. Every woman in the army must show that she is worthy of being in the same combat post and fighting on an equal basis with a man.”
