These 7 Foods Are Real Poison for Your Dog

Some foods, experts warn, should never be given to a dog, even in small quantities.

Admit it, do you often want to please your pet with what you think is a tasty morsel from the table? But this should not be done, experts warn – food that is healthy for people can turn out to be poison for a dog! Dog handler Irina Kabytova helped publication BB.LV understand the products that are strictly prohibited for these animals. The expert named seven of them and explained why they are so dangerous.

Chocolate

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine – they are used in medicine to stimulate the heart and reduce smooth muscle tone. However, a dog cannot effectively absorb these substances – the animal’s body simply does not have the necessary enzymes, the expert says:

“Chocolate eaten by a dog is fraught with vomiting, stool upset and dehydration. If help is not provided in time, more serious complications begin to develop: convulsions, internal bleeding. It could all end in death.”

Grape

Eating grapes or raisins can cause kidney failure, which can lead to death. Grapes contain monosaccharides and tannins, and the dog’s body is not able to metabolize them, so they act like toxins. It is important to exclude this product from the diet in any form, even in small quantities. For a dog weighing 8 kg, 4–5 grapes can cause death.

Onion

“Onions in any form are dangerous for your pet, even leaves, juice or dry seasonings such as onion powder.”

As the dog handler warns, onions contain N-propyl disulfide. This compound damages your dog’s red blood cells, reducing their ability to carry oxygen through the body, leading to anemia. The animal becomes lethargic, does not want to move, refuses to eat, and begins to lose consciousness. In severe cases, a blood transfusion is required. Garlic also has a similar effect, so it should also be excluded from your pet’s diet.

Avocado

All parts of the avocado, including the fruit, seeds and leaves, contain persin. Irina Kabytova explains its danger: “Persin is toxic to animals. Because of it, fluid accumulates in the lungs and chest. This leads to breathing problems and oxygen deprivation.”

Coffee and tea

Coffee and tea are dangerous for animals due to caffeine. It stimulates the dog’s nervous system, which causes hyperactivity, diarrhea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, seizures and tremors. Excess caffeine is dangerous for heart rhythm disturbances and pulmonary failure:

“The dog is absolutely not allowed any drinks with caffeine. It is found in some energy drinks and sodas. Keep even coffee grounds and used tea bags away from the animal, and store coffee and tea in a hard-to-reach place – for example, in a cabinet.”

Raw potatoes

Potato tubers contain harmful solanine, the level of which decreases when cooked. The ban applies to raw root vegetables, but you can give boiled or baked ones to your pet, but don’t get carried away. Potatoes are allowed for dogs occasionally, in small quantities and as a treat, not the main food. Potatoes contain a lot of carbohydrates. If you give it constantly and in large quantities, it will lead to weight gain. If you want to pamper your pet, offer him a piece of apple, carrot sticks or peas – but only fresh or frozen, not canned.

Alcohol

Even a small dose leads to ethanol poisoning. Main symptoms: loss of coordination, convulsions, lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting. A large dose of alcohol can trigger a heart attack, coma and death. Not only alcoholic drinks, but also perfume and cleaning products that contain alcohol should be kept away from your dog.
