What to do if you see a red line on the road: what is it for?

A very original solution was conceived (and implemented) abroad to put an end to road accidents.

Road accidents continue to be a major problem, despite significant efforts being made at European level to put an end to the loss of life on the roads. One of the main causes of road accidents is aggressive driving and exceeding the speed limit.

However, on a road in Spain, in Malaga, where 10 people died in 2023 alone, an innovative solution was invented (and implemented). This is the A-355 road, also known in Andalusia as the “road of fear”, on which the regional authorities, in collaboration with the General Directorate of Traffic, have applied special markings to the road surface.

They placed a 4 km long red line on the dividing strip, which replaced the double solid one. The “red tape” indicates to drivers that overtaking is strictly prohibited.. At the same time, it has a rough surface, which causes noise and vibration in the car as soon as the driver tries to overtake by going into oncoming traffic.

According to Spanish media, in the near future some speed cameras will work as an addition to the red line to punish those who are accustomed to “press on the gas” with all their might. There are also plans to install digital road signs that will inform drivers of the maximum speed limit.

In Greece the red line is something unknown, although some similar measures have been taken. For example, on the Athens-Souniou coastal highway, in the “Glystra Lagonisiou” area, “orange tapes” are placed on the road, which prevent violation of the speed limit by creating excessive noise when vehicles pass along them at high speed.
