Right-wing Greek parties”Νίκη” And “Σπαρτιάτες” are literally “harassing” the government with their proposal that voting on marriage and adoption of children by LGBTQ+ couples in parliament should be named so that during the process there are no deputies who will “hide” behind anonymity.
Kyriakos Velopoulos invited deputies to personally declare whether they are gay or not. If so, then, according to the president of the right-wing party “Hellenic Solution”, a conflict of interests arises. The president of the right-wing party “Ελληνική Λύση” (Greek Solution), commenting on the statement of the parliamentarian from “Πλεύση Ελευθερίας” (Freedom of Movement) Spyros Bibila, who called on the church to “tell us how many gay priests there are,” said: “Why don’t we ask how many homosexuals are there?” In other words, to know how they will vote on the marriage bill.
In particular, deputies from parties “Νίκη”(Nicky) and “Σπαρτιάτες”(Spartans) took the appropriate steps and prepared the text of the roll call vote, but without the participation of Velopoulos’ “Ελληνικής Λύσης” (Greek decision).
Thus, the document asking for a nominal name, which will be presented on Wednesday at the beginning of the plenary debate, contains a total of 21 signatures: 10 Nika deputies, 10 Spartans deputies and the signature of independent deputy Konstantinos Floros.
The text calls for a roll call vote on the principle and all articles of the bill, with the first signature belonging to Mr. Natsiou and the second to Mr. Stygas.
Because of this particular resolution, an internal “war” began not only in New Democracy, but also in parliament as a whole. In particular, there are many who did not hesitate to publicly express their opinion, condemning the bill that the government wants to pass. Thus, in the parliamentary group, 15 deputies publicly stated that they would vote against it.
Antonis Samaras is a typical example. A few days ago, the Social Affairs Committee, after a shocking meeting (the minutes of which were published in Athens news) approved a bill recognizing LGBTQ+ marriages and giving them the right to have minor children. The government will subsequently return with a new “complementary” bill legalizing LGBTQ+ childbearing through surrogacy. Although, as we see, only a minority of MPs from PASOK and the left (elected together with SYRIZA and now defected to the new left) have found the courage to oppose this law, they are clearly against “marriage” and the adoption of children by LGBTQ+ couples.
