All ages are submissive to love: a 48-year-old man fell in love with a 103-year-old lady

A 48-year-old lawyer from Estonia claims to be in love with his grandfather’s 103-year-old widow. He is now asking permission to stay in Australia with “his girlfriend”.

According to media reports, Mart Soeson has been in a relationship with Elfriede Riit since 2013. The couple lived together until the elderly woman had to move into a nursing home in 2022. Elfrida Riit, who was also born in Estonia, was the second wife of the man’s grandfather. She will turn 104 in February. The couple insist their 55-year age difference does not matter and believe they should be allowed to continue their “exclusive long-term commitment”.

“What started out as the close, warm relationship I always had with my late grandfather’s widow slowly but surely turned into a very meaningful one,” says Mart Soeson.

The man is now trying to obtain permanent residence in Australia because his elderly partner lives there. However, his visa application is rejected. He has not received an official response, but believes that the Australian Department of Home Affairs is questioning his genuine relationship with Elfriede Riit.

“Yes, I know there is an age difference between us. And I know this is a problem for some people. But, as a rule, the age difference is stigmatized if the bride is young and the groom is elderly. But what about us, when everything is the other way around, what’s the problem?” the man emphasized.

Now the man has appealed to the Administrative Court of Appeal with a request for a visa. The elderly woman was present at the hearing along with three other witnesses (speaking in defense of the couple).

Outside court, Mart Soeson spoke of their meeting in early 1996 when Elfrida Riit came to Australia to study English. The complainant said the woman knew the man as her husband Alfred’s grandson and invited him to stay at her home in Sydney’s south-west.
