“Smart bombs”: sending American GLSDB to Ukraine approved after successful tests in January (video)

The latest high-precision long-range missiles (Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb) will soon receive APU. On January 16th they were successfully tested over the Gulf of Mexico in Florida.

Citing sources, this was reported by Politico and then by Reuters. The range of GLSDB will double that of HIMARS. Thus, writes BB.LV, Ukraine is becoming a testing ground for the latest weapons.

High-precision glide missiles have a flight range of 150 kilometers. The system consists of a small diameter bomb with a rocket engine. American-Swedish homing missiles are launched, among other things, from HIMARS launchers.

Politico notes that Kyiv will receive the latest version of this munition, which is launched from the ground. The US Army currently only has an air-launched version of this munition.

Reuters notes that the new weapon “will allow Ukraine to hit targets at twice the range of missiles it currently fires using US-supplied HIMARS systems.” According to the publication’s interlocutors, this will prompt Russia to move its warehouses even further from the front line.

Ukraine urgently needs GLSDB to replenish the limited batch of ATACMS missiles with a firing range of up to 160 kilometers, which the United States transferred to it in early autumn.

As Reuters notes, since March 2023, the Russian Ministry of Defense has reported at least four times the interception of GLSDB missiles, the last time on October 26. The agency’s sources claim that the United States has not supplied Ukraine with a single “smart bomb.”

As before reported our publication, Ukraine will soon receive AASM cruise bombs from France.
