An earthquake of magnitude 4.8, according to the revised decision of the Geodynamic Institute, occurred on Friday afternoon (19/01) near the island of Evia.
According to seismologists, the earthquake occurred 24 km from Kymi (Evia), at approximately equal distance between the islands of Evia and Skyros, and was especially felt in Attica, which is about 80 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake. The focal depth of the source is at 14.6 km.
After the main shock, which occurred at 16:14, at the time of publication at 18:08 there were 8 more aftershocks, with a magnitude ranging from 1.8 to 3 on the Richter scale.
Seismologists Gerasimos Houliaras and Akis Tselentis spoke about today’s earthquake, which was felt in many areas of Attica. Juliaras said the area is earthquake-prone, adding that the phenomenon needs to be monitored as it is too early for the scientific community to judge whether the earthquake is a major one or not. He was reassuring, however, saying that although it was still early, it did not appear there was any particular problem, noting that “there should be no concern.”
