Murder of V. Zambunis: Who ordered his execution?

The most expensive murder “contract” in recent years was the recent execution of 44-year-old Vangelis Zambunis, the head of one of the most powerful clans of the capital’s mafia from the Athens district of Neos Kosmos, and the main question that is being asked is who signed it.

Last June, Zambunis was considered one of the main suspects in the Kalashnikov shooting death of Vassilis Rubetes in Korydallos.
Rubetes was also considered a rival of the 44-year-old mafioso and his main competitor in the oil trade. He was also the shadow owner of at least one gas station on Piraeos Street.

A few months ago, in Neos Kosmos, a few tens of meters from the Vangelis Zambunis gas station, a stolen car was found with a Kalashnikov assault rifle and cans of gasoline hidden in the luggage compartment.

Police believe the car must have been used in the plan to attack Zambunis and even found Rubeti’s DNA in it.

One of the scenarios that was developed at the time (no supporting evidence was found) was that Vangelis Zambunis prevented an attack on himself by “neutralizing” his rival, and Vasilis Rubetes fell dead under a barrage of Kalashnikov fire at the entrance to his house.

In light of the above, many now believe that the brutal murder of Vangelis Zambunis on Sunday morning – this is an act of revenge.

Others have a different version.

They refer to recent bombings in Western Attica targeting expatriates from the countries of the former USSRinvolved in smuggling cigarettes and oil.

They also attribute an active role in this business to Vangelis Zambunis, being confident that the murder the day before yesterday is not related to the Rubetes case, but is aimed at controlling the illegal trade in tobacco and petroleum products.

Footprints expatriates from the countries of the former Soviet Union were also found in the murder of Yiannis Skaftouros in May 2022 at his holiday home in Skourtas.

The police are studying CCTV footage to find out whether there was a support group in addition to the 3-4 hitmen who carried out the death sentence, while at the same time conducting a thorough check of the mobile phones that were in Zambunis’ car to identify online chats, phone calls and messages that will indicate who or who ordered him to be literally filled with 97 bullets in less than 30 seconds.

Witnesses to the incident, people close to Zambunis, and those who know people and situations related to that night and the Greek mafia will be called to testify.

Of course, someone will say why from 2017 to today several dozen contract killings have been carried out, and not a single one has been solved…

In all cases the same feature was present, which does not correspond to the term “underworld”:

They are known everywhere, they have “bosom friends” not only among businessmen, but also among Greek oligarchs, while they control many police officers with their money.

Modern criminals are “integrated” into the milieu of politicians and oligarchs and into Greek society, which tolerates corrupt public administration at all levels and uses the services of police officers who receive five or ten times their salaries from “sponsors”!

It is characteristic that V. Zambunis, in addition to the 9 mm Glock, which he owned, of course, without a license, had an AK-47 assault rifle of 7.62 mm caliber with two magazines in his trunk!

When you are prohibited from having even a pocketknife in a car because it is considered illegal possession of a weapon, the deceased drove around with an assault weapon without worrying about checks ELAS! I wonder why?

And in general, since the previous, too numerous murders were not solved, what are the chances that yesterday’s one will be solved? After all, they are all connected in one way or another.
