More changes coming to electricity tariffs – smart meter plan moves forward


Energy and Environment Minister Theos Skylakakis said millions of households will receive electricity bills with exact consumption amounts, ending billing discrepancies.

It is noted that until now, three “έναντι” (advance) invoices and a statement were sent out to those who chose monthly payment every four months, and one “έναντι” and one final invoice were sent to those who pay bimonthly.

Meanwhile, according to Skylakakis, on Friday more than 70% of consumers chose the variable feed-in tariff.

By all accounts, electricity prices were relatively low this month, largely due to competition, mild weather and lower gas prices overseas.

Meanwhile, the government’s plan to install 7.5 million smart meters is moving forward. ΔΕΔΔΗΕ has agreed a €150 million loan from the European Investment Bank and the project is expected to be completed by the end of the decade.

In addition to saving energy, smart meters are expected to help reduce electricity theft, which has become common in recent years and is costly to electric companies, consumers and government revenues.
