The number of coronavirus cases is growing – schools will open on Monday with 11 safety measures

EODY recommends measures to reduce the risk of transmission of respiratory infections such as coronavirus and influenza in the school environment in a statement issued Thursday afternoon.

The measures apply to teachers, students and other staff. In order to reduce the risk of transmission of respiratory infections in schools (infections with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, influenza, etc.), EODY recommends that teachers, students and other staff follow the following basic measures:

Regular hand washing

  • When hands are visibly dirty (soap and water)
  • Before and after meals: preparing or serving food, eating, after going to the toilet.
  • Hand washing with liquid soap and water for at least 20 seconds should be followed by thorough drying with disposable paper towels and disposing of them in trash cans.
  • Alternatively, the use of an alcohol-based antiseptic solution is recommended.

Good ventilation of classrooms. It is recommended to open windows regularly to improve ventilation.

  • Avoid poorly ventilated areas with crowds of people (corridors, stairs, elevators).
  • Avoid gatherings of large numbers of people – maintain physical distance.
  • Avoid touching your face, nose, eyes and mouth, and wash your hands thoroughly before and after.
  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow or tissue. If a cloth is used, it should be carefully disposed of after one use followed by hand washing.

What to do if a person becomes infected

  • If a student has symptoms of a respiratory infection (sore throat, cough, runny nose) or a positive laboratory test result for a respiratory pathogen such as SARS-CoV-2, influenza virus, or RSV, the student is advised to stay home and limit contact with others.
  • It is recommended to stay at home until symptoms disappear or improve and for at least 24 hours after the temperature has completely dropped (without taking antipyretics).

However, an update is expected from the Department of Education to clarify what will happen to absences from students who either have symptoms or test positive for coronavirus, influenza or SARS and are advised to be absent from classes.
