The Ministry of Digital Governance has launched public consultations on the tender for the project “Development of a new high-performance computing system”, known as the DAIDALOS supercomputer.

According to the corresponding announcement of the ministry, the subject of the tender is the supply and installation of modern computing equipment, data storage space and software for the implementation of the new high-performance computing system “DAEDALUS”. In addition, the tender includes associated training, installation, configuration and multi-year maintenance.

The new supercomputer “DAEDALOS” will be the largest in the country and one of the most powerful in Europe, and will also be included in the list of the 500 best systems in the world in terms of performance (T500) and energy efficiency (GREEN500). It will be installed in the Lavrion Technological Cultural Park of the National Technical University of Metso, in a restored former power plant building, a recognized monument of modern industrial heritage.

When designing the facility in Lavrion, the principles of environmental sustainability were taken into account. It is noted that it will be powered by renewable energy sources and use modern cooling systems to ensure low energy costs.

DAIDALOS will be 120 times more powerful than the ARIS supercomputer available in Greece. In particular, it will be hybrid, having both central processing units (CPUs) and video card accelerators (GPUs) with a total expected theoretical performance of 60 PFlops. Thanks to this performance, it is expected that the DAIDALOS supercomputer will be included in the list of the world’s 500 best (TOP500) and in the list of energy efficient (GREEN500).

Its architecture is ideal for running larger, more heterogeneous applications, combining high-performance computing with artificial intelligence, machine learning and big data analytics.

He will play a central role in research aimed at developing new, more efficient and reliable services to serve citizens through natural language queries, personalized medicine, fire protection, spatial planning, and in the areas of smart mobility and autonomous vehicles, among others. .

The development and operation of the supercomputer is the responsibility of the National Network of Infrastructures for Technology and Research (EDYTE SA – GRNET), part of the Ministry of Digital Governance.

The cost of purchasing the supercomputing system is budgeted at €33 million and will be covered up to 30% by the European Joint Venture Initiative EuroHPC JU, while 70% of the project will be implemented under the National Recovery and Resilience Programme. Greece 2.0 plan with funding from the European Union – NextGenerationEU. The total cost of the investment, including the operation and reconstruction of the building, is estimated at 50 million euros.

Recently, commenting on the role of the new supercomputer, the Minister of Digital Governance said pointedly: “It will be installed in the Lavrio Technology Park, so that from the first day we will have very powerful machines on the map and will “launch” everything that the commission and our ministry are planning around artificial intelligence.”
